About Us

How We Choose the Accountants in Our Network

Freelance Accountants Harrow is a free referral network — we do not provide accounting services ourselves. What we do is operate a rigorous, 9-stage vetting process to ensure every accountant we refer is properly qualified, HMRC-registered, IR35-competent, and experienced with Harrow-area freelancers.

A Matching Service, Not an Accounting Practice

Freelance Accountants Harrow is a free referral network connecting Harrow freelancers with fully vetted, certified local accountants. We do not employ accountants, file tax returns, or provide financial advice ourselves.

Our role is to do the verification work upfront — checking qualifications, HMRC registration, IR35 expertise, professional insurance, and client track record — so that when we introduce you to an accountant, you can engage with confidence rather than uncertainty.

We operate independently of every accountant in our network. We receive a small fixed referral fee from accountants when a successful engagement begins — but we have no financial incentive to steer you towards any particular firm, and our fee never influences what the accountant charges you.

Independent of any accounting firm

We are not affiliated with, owned by, or financially incentivised by any single practice. Our referrals are based on matching criteria and performance data — not commercial relationships.

Freelancer-specific — not a generic directory

We only admit accountants who demonstrate specific experience with freelancers and contractors. Generalist practices who primarily serve personal tax clients or large businesses are not in our network.

No cost to freelancers, ever

Our matching service is entirely free for freelancers. We are funded by a small, fixed referral fee paid by accountants — only once a successful engagement begins. This fee never affects what the accountant charges you.

Our 9-Stage Vetting Process

Every accountant in our network must pass all nine stages before receiving a single referral. There are no shortcuts and no exceptions.

See the full vetting process in detail
01

Professional Qualification Verification

Every applicant must hold a current, practising certificate from a recognised UK accountancy body. We verify membership directly with ACCA, ICAEW, or CIMA. Lapsed or suspended memberships are rejected at this stage without exception.

02

HMRC Agent Registration Check

To legally file Self Assessment returns on behalf of clients, an accountant must be a registered HMRC authorised agent. We verify each firm's Agent Services Account (ASA) status and confirm they hold a valid agent code before accepting them into our network.

03

Freelancer and Contractor Experience Review

We conduct a structured interview to assess depth of experience with freelance and contractor taxation. We require a minimum of three years handling IR35 assessments, sole trader accounts, and contractor limited company management.

04

IR35 Competency Assessment

We require demonstrated competency in off-payroll working rules including the April 2021 private sector reform, Status Determination Statement preparation, and HMRC enquiry representation. Applicants are tested on real-scenario questions before admission.

05

Professional Indemnity Insurance Verification

We require a minimum of £500,000 professional indemnity (PI) insurance cover from every accountant in our network. Applicants must supply a current certificate of insurance from an FCA-regulated insurer. We re-verify annually.

06

Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Compliance

Under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, accountants must be registered with a supervisory body for AML purposes. We confirm each firm holds valid AML supervision through their professional body.

07

Client Reference Checks

We contact a minimum of three existing freelance or contractor clients and ask a structured set of questions covering responsiveness, deadline management, IR35 advice quality, and value for money. Negative references on core criteria result in rejection.

08

ICO Registration and Data Protection

We verify that each firm is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) under the UK GDPR and confirm their data handling practices meet the standards required when receiving lead referrals from our platform.

09

Ongoing Performance Monitoring

We collect structured feedback from every client we refer and monitor it on a rolling 12-month basis. Any accountant whose average rating falls below 4.0 out of 5 is placed under review. Repeated complaints result in removal from the network.
